EV Charging Stations - Hardware

Home / Solutions / EV Charging Stations / EV Hardware

Charging an electric car is a simple process: you simply plug in your car into a charger that is connected to the electric grid. Think of it like charging a cell phone. Some phones have different operating systems (think Android and iOS), different shaped charging ports, and there are different types of chargers to refuel your battery; same goes for EV charging stations, also known as electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE).

Types of EV Charging Stations

AC Charging Stations (Level 2 charging station)
AC charging stations are what we think of when we imagine an EV charger. You've likely seen these at multifamily residences, corporate offices, and sports arenas. AC charging stations offer reliable, all-purpose charging for longer charging sessions.

DC fast charging stations (Level 3 charging station)
DC charging stations provide high-power charging for shorter charging sessions making them ideal for commercial and industrial settings such as rest stops or retail businesses. The quick turnaround enables drivers to recharge during a short break as opposed to being plugged in all day for a full charge.

AC and DC Terminology
“DC” in Fast Chargers refers to “direct current,” which is the type of power that the EV batteries use. The Level 1 & 2 charging stations use “AC,” or “alternating current,” which you’ll find 120V AC plugs in typical American households.

What makes DC charging so fast? It is the process. DC chargers convert AC power to DC within the charging station and deliver DC power directly to the battery, which is why they charge faster. Please note that not every electric vehicle is capable of fast charging.
